Business Planning For the Very Small Business

Business Planning For The Very Small Business by Margaret Lukens

Recently I heard something from a struggling new business owner. She didn’t have a business plan because, she said, “I thought I wasn’t big enough for that.”

I can understand exactly why she would get that idea. Most business plans are designed for companies that hire numerous employees, rent large spaces (or buy them), and invest in manufacturing equipment. But individuals working from a spare room in their home can also start businesses – let’s call them “very small businesses” or VSBs.

Professional Organizers Around the World Show and Tell – Rio de Janeiro

Become a Professional Organizer

I’ve been instructing and mentoring professional organizers for a few years and I am always fascinated by some of our differences based on geography/location and just for the record, I’m equally fascinated by our similarities. So,  I’ve decided to present a series of interviews with professional organizers from around the globe, showing not only where they live but also what it takes to become a professional organizer in other countries.

I proudly start this series of interviews with Adriana Westerberg & Micaela Goes, partners at Reformular and stars of the hit show, Santa Ajuda, on Canal GNT, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  With no further ado, let me present my featured Brazilian organizers and guests for this post.

OH snap!  Before I forget to mention it, if you’re a professional organizer in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe or South America, I’d like to hear from you!  Feel free to send me an email at: g thomas at metropolitan organizing dot com

Organizing & Kaizen

Kaizen Approach

Kaizen is Japanese for change (Kai) towards good (Zen).  Kaizen is all about bypassing the fight or flight response when moving toward change.  Robert Maurer, Ph.D., in his awesome book, One Small Step Can Change Your Life (Workman Publishing 2004) says the way to do this is a simple 5 step approach:

  1. Ask small questions
  2. Think small thoughts
  3. Take small actions
  4. Solve small problems
  5. Bestow small rewards

Certainly I’d heard of ‘fight or flight’ before but had not appreciated how this mindset is a fairly normal reaction everyone feels at some point to greater or lesser extents.

Reasons For Joining the National Association of Professional Organizers

Guest post written by Jane Campbell,  PhD, CPO

Since becoming a Professional Organizer and member of NAPO in 2003, I’ve had the privilege of meeting hundreds of organizers from all over the country and teaching classes for new members looking for information on how to become a professional organizer. It’s a great organization, but I don’t want you to take my word for it. Instead, I’ve invited my colleague Jane Campbell, who has belonged to NAPO even longer than I have,  to tell you why she’s a member, and why she thinks you should be too.

Professional Organizer Training

Required Reading & Hoarding

When I began working with hoarders, very little had been written about hoarding, either from a psychological perspective or with regard to developing organizing strategies. Today, you can benefit from a number of excellent, well-researched resources designed for hoarders, their loved ones, and for the professional organizers who work to improve their lives. Consider the following as required reading.

Organizing Essentials: Required Reading for New Professional Organizers

Professional Organizer Training

Required Reading (note these are really not “required” reading)

There are so many books about organizing and so many experts who specialize in the field of organizing that it can be overwhelming to try to acquire an organizing education and pursue professional organizer training without amassing your own public library. To guide you, I have curated a list of organizing and related books that I have read, enjoyed, and kept on my shelves.
