A woman I met while doing a presentation asked: “Geralin, are you always super-organized and if not, what do YOU do to get motivated?”
My Answer: Heck no!
When I need to get motivated, I put on music: peppy music, happy music, music that I can’t sit still to. I have a compilation of my favorite tunes and I simply push play and GO (Get Organized). I have a stash of music on an MP3 player that I listen to; these tunes never fail to get me going. Music is motivating!
Want to know what am I listening to while I write this?
Us3: Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)
Jr. Walker and the All Stars: Shotgun
The Gap Band: Burn Rubber
Mary J. Blige: Family Affair
I’m not the only one who uses music to get motivated! Here’s what a few other folks listen to when they need to get moving:
My collection ranges from A to Z.
Jazzy – Herbie H Possibilities, Stanley Jordon Live in NY, Norah Jones, Miles Davis B. Brew
Shotgun! YES. How about Les McCann: Compared to What and Aretha Franklin: Pink Cadillac
If I need peppy I like: Who Knew by Pink; Black Eye Peas – Pump It; OutKast – Hey Ya
If I want more moderate or mellow I love Taylor Swift, Michael Buble, Carrie Underwood.
Proud – Heather Small (Theme from Biggest Loser)
Flight of the Bumblebee (When you need to clean quick!)
Eye of the Tiger – Survivor, Rocky Soundtrack (When you need to feel like a champion)
She Works Hard for the Money – Donna Summer (After a long day at work)
Let’s Go Crazy – Prince (When the grandparents take the kids for the weekend)
9 to 5 – Dolly Parton (self explanatory)
Working for the Weekend – Loverboy (when you need a good blast of the 80’s)
Confessions on the Dance Floor – Madonna (YES, the entire album)
Some older songs on my GO playlist:
Groove is in the Heart — Deee-Lite,
ABC — The Jackson 5,
Cecilia — Simon and Garfunkel, and
American Girl — Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Some newer songs on my GO playlist:
Love Song — Sara Bareilles,
Fidelity — Regina Spektor, and
Over My Head (Cable Car) — The Fray
I couldn’t resist posting my own list on “Enough is Enough”. We should consider an organizer’s greatest hits album (or at least a “Best iTunes to Organize To”)…check out my list including some obscure tunes. Just reading these other lists made me crank up some Outkast, and the mention of Dee-Lite took me down memory lane.
What music motivates YOU?

Dixie Chicks (sort of an oldie but goodie) to get going …
George Winston piano for creative times…
The music I had to listen to growing up, my brother’s Queen, The Cars, Aerosmith albums — which now are staples to get myself going
Love The Prince song, Let’s Go Crazy. Forgotten all about it … must go GET it !

Hi Geralin,
I love this, I have a whole page in my book “The Accidental Organiser” dedicated to this. I am a hard rock, upbeat girl. AC/DC and also my ultimate anthem for a clear out Queen “Don’t Stop me know”..
Scooter – No Pain, No Gain
Crystal Method – Cherry Twist & Weapons of Mass Distortion
Just about anything over at http://www.djsteveboy.com/groovelectric.html
AC/DC – Thunderstruck, TNT
Sweet – Ballroom Blitz
Billy Idol – Dancin’ with Myself
actually, as long as the music is playing…I’m good!
I like to match my motivation to the situation. Holiday music for Christmas motivation, happy music for cleaning and soothing music for dinner making. Love all the different songs here! Adding these to my play list!
I made a playlist of the songs Ellen dances to on her show. I also use Pandora online which will create a playlist of sound alikes so if you plug in WORD by Cameo, you will get fabulous 80s dance tunes. Of course if you plug in Enrique Iglesias’s “I Like It,” a more modern mix will make you move.
I love the idea of a “Music to Organizer By” CD. I was once given a “Music for Housework CD” which had many of the songs listed above. We can start with the list above.
