I’ve spent the last decade decluttering homes in North Carolina and beyond. I’ve co-designed and co-created countless closets and one thing I’m fairly confident about is that the women of North Carolina have a favorite fabric. Based on my experience, that favorite fabric is Denim—with a capital D. Specifically, Denim jeans.
We all know a great pair of jeans will glam-o-flage lumps, bumps and less-than-perfect rumps. They make you feel confident. They make you appear taller, slimmer, chic and fashionable. But why oh why is jeans-shopping so difficult? Why are there so many decisions?
I don’t believe in fashion.
There, I’ve said it. It’s out there. Fashion exists, of course I know that it does. It’s just that fashion, to me, is enslavement to somebody else’s ideas of what we should and shouldn’t be wearing. I don’t want to be a slave, and I don’t want to help anyone else to be a slave either.
Style, on the other hand, is something I believe strongly and fervently in. Style is a true and dynamic expression of who you are. Style tells us who you believe yourself to be – even if it’s just for today. Style is about self-expression. Style signals our sense of individual identity. I believe in style, and in particular I believe in sustainable style. Let me tell you more.
The clothing industry is a $375 billion dollar a year industry. Clothes are serious business. A lot of time, effort and money are put into creating fashion cycles that are designed to get our attention, get it fast and get it often.
Don’t take my word for it, I asked some of the most successful, well-respected, best-of-the-best professional organizers (organisers, with an “s” for those of you in the UK or down-under) and experts in their particular fields to name three of their most trusted, must-have, very favorite organizing tools and I’ve collected and posted their responses.

I’ve been instructing and mentoring professional organizers for a few years and I am always fascinated by some of our differences based on geography/location and just for the record, I’m equally fascinated by our similarities. Geralin: Julie, what residential systems have people developed to maintain their housekeeping chores in more earth-friendly ways?
Julie: Great question! When working with clients after we organize and/or declutter, my next suggestion is to use green cleaners. Since 1950, at least 70,000 new chemical compounds have been invented but only fraction have been tested for human toxicity.
Indoor air pollution is now as much of a concern (if not more) than outdoor air pollution. DIY green cleaners are easy, save money, smell better and you can find many recipes on the internet. Some of my favorite cleaners you can buy: Simple Green and eco-me.com products. Mrs. Meyers and Method are also widely available in most stores.
