On-The-Job Essentials
Since the A&E Network series “Hoarders” began, I’ve been contacted countless times by hoarders, friends/families of hoarders, and Professional Organizers wondering if I have a supply list I’m willing to share with them. Many of these people simply don’t have the time or resources to research a list of products that are necessary and helpful to take to a job site. For those folks, I’m posting a few of my “favorites” or “must-haves.”
Please keep in mind when looking over the list that it is not perfect. Rather, it’s a work in progress. If you have any additional suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate your input. You can add your comments below in the comments section.
Also, while cleaning supplies do appear on this list, I’d like to point out that Professional Organizers are not house cleaners. We typically don’t clean homes (unless otherwise stated), and you should not, under any circumstances expect a Professional Organizer to provide cleaning services. When hiring a “hoardologist” or “disorganization expert” or anyone else, you should ask exactly what services are included in the fee.
Note that many of the items on the list can be found at your local hardware and discount stores. I do not have any connections with the people at Uline, for example, and I am not benefitting personally from using any brand names or specific companies mentioned.

Finally, I want to say a special thank you to a few who graciously donated their time helping me help hoarders. While I was working on location during the filming of “Hoarders” (without internet access), these generous organizers put in late hours and helped me order products and organize items on various lists; they advised me about specific tools for specific jobs, made arrangements for products to be shipped, or looked up SKU numbers. List for working with Hoarders
Thank you Geralin. This list is extensive and very useful. I will keep it in my resources lists. As a member of POC (Professional Organizers in Canada), I appreciate the level of professionalism that you bring to Hoarders. It is great to see how you handle each situation with compassion, guidance and professional integrity. It lets the public know that what we do is important and not just about cleaning and dealing with stuff. Continued success on Hoarders!

Margarita,
Many thanks for taking time to read and post a comment. I do appreciate hearing from POCs!
I'm always curious and wondering, what besides the spelling, is different between American Professional Organizers and Organisers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand or other countries? Do you carry any supplies not listed?
Has the number of hoarders seeking help, in Canada, increased since the show started
Geralin
Thank you!
Hi Geralin,
Thank you so much for adding 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to this list. We have certainly enjoyed working with you on "Hoarders". It has been quite the experience.
Looking forward to see us on Monday's episode!

Great list!
Wow! I can't believe how wonderfully detailed this list is. It has taken into account just about anything and everything that people can encounter.
Of course... I would say you only need most of these thing in extreme cases of hording. Still, a very informative post. Thank you!
Extreme cases~
This list is a somewhat comprehensive list of all things I've ever used (more than once). I've never been on a job where all of these things are needed but I have to admit that it's convenient having everything listed in one place. Hope you find it useful and adjust according to your needs.

Geralin - I love this list
Geralin - I love this list and have saved it for reference as not only have I needed it in the past (and wished I had it!) but will need it in the future.
The list is very thorough, and the only thing I could think to add, though it's not critical, is plastic project folders - I use these to corral "projects" or sets of paper that are being (or should be) actively used.
However, I am curious - what is the hula hoop for? I'm guessing it's not for more exercise! Last time I worked in a hoarding situation, I could barely walk for two days - much less think about hula hooping!

Liz,
The hula hoop is for keeping clients focused on 1 small area at a time.
Often they feel like the task of sorting is just too overwhelming and they don't know where to begin. Keeping their attention focused can be very productive.
Of course this works well with an old picture frame or any other object lying around.

Thank you Scott. You are a wonderful resource for me as well as other organizers. I know why you have such a great reputation among colleagues-->it's because you are generous with your knowledge! You are "THE" go-to-guy for so many of us.
Note to all reading: Scott speaks geek (fluently) and has fabulous Apple/Mac seminars about organizing, time management, etc.
if your office or group wants to hire a speaker, I'm warning you, he's entertaining and informative.
