one finger orange watercolor - indicating a strategic approach to branding

Too many professional organizers and productivity consultants make the same mistakes during the business start-up phase. They decide to start their home organization businesses and announce it to the world. Then they create a business name, pick colors, design a logo (or had one designed), create business cards and a website. They believe they’ve done their branding homework. It’s “mission accomplished” and they move onto marketing. Or sales, advertising, or public relations. They’ve taken a tactical approach instead of a strategic approach to branding.

Sometimes, this goes well for the first few client sessions, however, more often than not, they start feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. Some give up and shut down.

The truth is, there’s a lot more to branding and building a sustainable brand than having a business name, logo and website. Branding exists inside the mind of our clients; it’s how they experience our brand that matters. And, they experience us through many touchpoints. Branding, like marketing, is all about relationships and the most meaningful relationships aren’t developed after one conversation. They take time and energy. They are emotional, give us “all the feels” and they are organic in nature.

Without a strategic approach to branding most professional organizers:

  • Use multiple voices, tones, and viewpoints, which confuse potential clients and journalists looking for subject matter experts!
  • Can’t seem to establish the “know-like-trust” factor because it is not clear exactly what you or your brand stand for. Potential clients drift away.
  • Creative service providers can’t make heads or tails of your messaging.

The result?

  • Mixed messaging to undefined markets. (Are they even the right clients for you?)
  • Costly confusion when ordering business and marketing collateral.
  • An untidy, disorganized business behind the scenes.

You already know this, but it’s worth repeating: you need to be organized to be an organizer. The best thing to do is get super organized before you start presenting yourself and your business to the world. You do that by deploying a strategy.

How do you get organized when you don’t know what you don’t know?
